HUNTSVILLE – Safer Highway 11 Muskoka is pleased at the Ford government's commitment to replace all at-grade interchanges on Hwy. 11 between Huntsville and Bracebridge.

"Hundreds of Muskoka residents have asked the government to improve highway safety, and the government has listened,” said spokesperson Kevin Powers. “We applaud the Ford government for listening to its constituents and making safety a priority."

In response to a question from Parry Sound-Muskoka MPP Norm Miller in the Ontario Legislature Thursday, Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney committed to improving the safety of Highway 11.

“The Ministry will develop an implementation plan for the recommended improvements to ensure the safety of Hwy. 11. Our goal is to remove all the at-grade intersections and replace them with a combination of interchanges and crossover bridges,” Mulroney said.

According to Mulroney, the ministry is undergoing an operational performance review of that stretch of highway. Its recommendations will then be developed into an implementation plan.

“We believe that this government recognizes the urgency of the situation along this stretch of Highway 11 and will act as quickly as possible to make the necessary improvements,” Powers said.

Over the past ten years, there have been more than 950 accidents along this 35km stretch of highway.

Safer Highway 11 Muskoka is a grassroots community group that was created to raise awareness of the dangers of the at-grade intersections along Highway 11 in Muskoka.
