Four major education unions in Ontario, including the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) will be taking part in a one-day strike on Friday, February 21.
All Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) elementary and secondary schools will be closed to students on Friday, February 21, if an agreement is not reached.
On Feb. 12 the ETFO released the following statement regarding the upcoming strike.
“On Friday, February 21, elementary and secondary teachers and education workers represented by the four major education unions in Ontario will stand up to the Ford government’s education cuts by participating in a one-day walkout across the province.
This is the first time since the political protest of 1997 that teachers and education workers from Ontario’s main education affiliates will all be out of their classrooms on the same day. Nearly 200,000 teachers and education workers will strike across 72 school boards, affecting nearly 5,000 schools across the province in protest of the government funding cuts to education.“
The Ford government released a statement of its own today indicating that talks might resume.
“Students belong in class. My objective has always been to reach deals with our education labour partners - deals that are fair to students, hard-working parents, and our valued teachers and education workers.
I am pleased the mediator has called all parties back to the negotiating table, as we have always said, we stand ready to negotiate to reach a deal that keeps students in class.
The government has demonstrated our commitment to reaching a deal by affirming our commitment to maintaining all-day kindergarten, investing in special education needs, and keeping classroom sizes low."
Daycares, before and after school programs, and community use of school after-hours programs in Muskoka are not affected by the strike.
There is financial support available to parents of eligible children for each day of school that is missed due to labour disruption. Parents and guardians of TLDSB students are asked to visit the Ministry of Education website at www.Ontario.ca/SupportForParents or the dedicated Support for Parents Helpline at 888-444-3770.
