This article is inspired by last weeks Mental Health awareness week.

If you want to break free from it, you will find a way, you will work for it, you will make time for it, you won’t find excuses. If you want anything bad enough you will find ways to make it happen!

Last week was Mental Health awareness week. If you are tired of dealing with mental health challenges, I highly recommend starting your own fitness journey. Make your health a priority and if you haven’t been faced with any of health challenges you should know that one in two people will have a battle with cancer sometime in their life.

According to the World Health Organization in 2017 300 million people around the world battled depression; this is not a small number. The stigma around mental health surprises me to this day for so many people suffer and yet we still don’t talk about it. For your mental and physical health I highly suggest you start getting into fitness. Start doing something active. Anything!

Do something,

1- You enjoy.

2- To keep you moving to improve your overall health.

3- To help maintain or build muscle mass while including a cardiovascular exercise.

4- To introduce healthy changes in your diet.

Exercise, nutrition and being active helps produce serotonin and dopamine in your brain. These help your brain feel more positive, helps clear the negative fog, it will give you untapped energy all of which helps you smile more. It wont be easy but the fact is it helps; it helps a lot! At one time I was on medication and now I am not. That doesn’t mean it will help everyone come off of their medication but it will help you to feel better overall.

Remember if you have survived all the things you have already faced you already have more strength then you know. Lifting weights reminds me of that, it reminds me of all I am capable of. Remember even in the darkest days you are strong enough to survive anything. You are strong, powerful, and you are NOT a quitter.

I used my own experiences to fuel me so use yours. Use whats been done to you in your life to fuel the positive change you are looking for. Do it for yourself. I know we cannot change whats been done to us or what we’ve done to ourselves but remember you have choices to put the past behind you and begin changing your future. Using your powers from within you are going to break free from the chains that have held you for so long and live the rest of your life as your best life.

I never believed it until I started and the positive changes all around started happening. If I can fit it in working two jobs, being a single mom with lots of baggage behind me; then so can you! You may not have my entire life story but it hasn’t been easy. For this reason I have a Japanese proverb tattoo “Fall down seven times, stand up eight” as a reminder.

So if you have dreams, if you are tired of the chains, feeling like garbage its time to break free and spend the rest of your time living your best life.

We just celebrated thanksgiving and I have to tell you it’s one of my most favorite holidays. In the darkest of times I look around and focus on what I have to be thankful for.

Health Recipe of the week – Katie Wilmshurt – Our Journey In Fitness & Healthy Living


Use certified GLUTEN free oats to make it gluten free.


 2 cups of blueberries, divided

 2 cups of old fashioned oats

 ½ cup of chopped pecans

 1 tsp. of ground cinnamon

 1 tsp. of baking powder

 ½ tsp. of salt

 2 cups of almond milk

 ¼ cup of maple syrup

 2 tbsp. of flaxseed

 1 tbsp. of coconut oil, melted

 2 tsps. Of vanilla extract


*Preheat oven to 375 F then grease an 8 X11 inch baking dish. Place 1 cup of

blueberries into the baking dish.

*In a large bowl, combine the oats, pecans, cinnamon, baking powder and salt.

Transfer to the baking dish, on top of the berries.

*In a small mixing bowl, combine the almond milk, maple syrup, flaxseed,

melted coconut oil and vanilla extract. Pour over the oats and gently press

down. Make sure all the oats are covered in the wet mixture. Sprinkle the

remaining blueberries on top.

*Bake uncovered in the preheated oven until the oatmeal is golden and the

mixture is set, about 35/40 minutes.

* Allow to cool for 5 minutes

* Serve with coconut yoghurt and maple syrup if desired 

* The baked oatmeal can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days.
