Hello again! We had our first Board of Director’s Meeting of The Lakelands Association of Realtors last Friday, Nov. 15. Prior to the inaugural meeting, we had our Director’s orientation, which was lead by Bill Harrington. Bill was legal counsel to the Canadian Real Estate Association for many years, and has most recently has been advising boards on how to best conduct themselves.
I was impressed with his knowledge and his relaxed and fun attitude. He made a fairly dry subject come to life.
Bill covered the importance of governance, documentation, roles and responsibilities, director accountability, committees, board meetings and the board’s role in risk and the board CEO relationship.
He gave us a brief overview on how to take good minutes and confirmed that we are aware of the role of a policy committee versus providing management of staff.
We have a great board this year. There are eight of us in total. The board size is perfect. It is small enough for us to participate as one united group, and have time to discuss, perhaps disagree and make great decisions on behalf of our membership.
The Lakelands has a duty of providing skill, diligence, care, loyalty and obedience to our members, and we are well on our way! We have a couple of big projects this year, the first being supplying electronic lockboxes for customer safety. Stay tuned for details on that. Oh, and I would be remiss in not mentioning how great it was to stay at the Sherwood Inn on Lake Joseph. There was a slight dusting of snow on the ground, which just served to make the towering pines and the beautiful buildings at the lakeside even prettier than usual.
We received outstanding service at the Sherwood Inn. Highly recommend!
