The May long weekend is the start of many outdoor activities. One of my favourite things to do is to get up early and visit the farmers market. I love to wonder through the various tents, seeing all the fresh produce, fresh baking, and make-away food options that we are so lucky to have here in Ontario.
This year has seen many changes including the cancelling of many community events. Farmers markets, considered local grocery markets, were given the go ahead to open the beginning of June. Unlike previous year, markets this year are only to feature food vendors.
Heading out to the market this past weekend, as I walked through the merchants, the sights of fresh fruit and vegetables, canned preserves, fresh baked breads and pastries, maple syrup, honey, and then the smell of a wood burning pizza oven, I must come back one day for lunch.
There were some noticeable changes, handwash stations upon entering, one direction-no turning back, 6ft social distance from all vendors, and no touching the produce. It was great to see the community supporting the market, the vendors, and our local farmers. The main town markets are open this summer, take a moment and stop by and support a farmer!
Changes at the market:
* social distancing is a must, please only one adult per household
* there are sanitization stations throughout the market, but keeping a bottle in your pocket is handy after each transaction
* don’t bring your market bags, each vendor will give you a new bag with purchase
Local markets currently open this summer:
* Gravenhurst market – Wednesday
* Huntsville market – Thursday
* Bracebridge market – Saturday
